Install Penny for Grok and Grok Bot

Connect Penny to Grok or Grok Bot, save its skill, and check memory across new chats.

Instructions checked October 30, 2026

Give Grok the setup prompt

Open a private chat in Grok or your own Grok Bot and paste this prompt. MyPenny is the connector and skill name used in the prompt.

Please set up MyPenny as my memory and task system.
1. Add a custom MCP connector named "MyPenny" with the URL https://app.mypenny.ai/mcp and sign me in when it asks.
2. Once it's connected, call penny_start_setup and walk me through setup.
3. Load the MyPenny skill (penny_get_skill), save it as a skill, and follow it from now on: call penny_session_start at the start of each conversation, read Penny before answering anything my history would inform, and save notes, tasks, projects, and trackers there without waiting for me to ask.

Follow the sign-in link, sign in to your Penny account, and review the access request. Approve the connection yourself. Let the assistant run penny_start_setup and walk you through setup; review anything it proposes to bring over from the current conversation.

Add the connector manually if needed

If Grok cannot add the connector from chat, open Grok Connectors. Choose New Connector → Custom, name it MyPenny, and enter this MCP server URL:

https://app.mypenny.ai/mcp

Use the sign-in option offered for the server and complete Penny’s account authorization. Return to chat, enable Penny if needed, and send the setup prompt again, telling Grok the connector is already added. For a managed work account, your administrator may need to make the connector available first.

Save and enable the Penny skill

Check that the assistant called penny_get_skill and saved the returned Penny skill. If it is already saved, ask the assistant to update it rather than create another copy.

In Grok Bot, open Connect apps, choose the connected-app count, and check Private skills. Enable Penny for the Bot you are using. A skill in your library still needs to be enabled for each Bot.

If your Grok interface has no saved-skill control, ask it to read the Penny skill in the current chat and add the session-start, read-before-answering, and save instructions to the persistent instructions your interface offers. Keep your other instructions.

Saved instructions do not guarantee that the AI will load Penny in every chat. Start another new chat and check for a successful penny_session_start call. If it is missing, enable Penny and ask the assistant to use the Penny skill before continuing.

Save a harmless note

Choose three harmless words you have not used for a Penny test before. Replace the brackets and send this with Penny enabled:

Use Penny to save this private test note: “Penny setup check: [your three words].” Then read the note back from Penny. Only confirm success if both actions work.

Review and approve the save when your AI app asks. Inspect the successful Penny tool results and confirm the note also appears in your Penny dashboard. A connected card alone does not verify saving.

Recall it in another new chat

Open another new chat or task. Select or enable Penny again, then send this without including your three words:

Use Penny to read my newest private “Penny setup check” note. What three words did I save? If you cannot read Penny, say so.

Saving and recall are verified when Penny’s tool results confirm the save and the new chat returns your exact words. An answer from the original conversation can come from that conversation’s text.

You can move the test note to Trash in your Penny dashboard when finished. Remove only that test note.

Having trouble?

If tools are missing, check that MyPenny is connected and enabled for this chat or Bot. In Grok Bot, check the Penny entry in Private skills too. If sign-in does not finish, return to the connector and reconnect; keep the address exactly https://app.mypenny.ai/mcp. A connected label alone does not prove Penny can save or recall.

If Grok says a skill is saved but cannot use it in a new chat, ask it to show the saved skill and enable it for the current Bot. Keep reviewing tool approval requests. For help, use Penny Settings → Support or email hello@mypenny.ai with your app, device and error message. Keep passwords, tokens and private memory out of the message.

Permissions and privacy

Sign in with your own Penny account. Approved tools send their arguments to Penny; information returned from Penny becomes part of the requesting AI’s conversation and may be processed by its model provider. Review the host’s tool confirmations, chat sharing and history controls before using private notes. The public connector address contains no login or memory data.

Use your own Bot for personal Penny memory. Before connecting Penny to a shared Bot, review who can use that Bot and its connected tools; do not assume its conversations or tools are private to you.

Remove or disconnect

Open the connector in Grok’s Connectors, or Penny under Grok Bot’s Connect apps, and use the disconnect or remove control your interface offers. Disable or remove the saved Penny skill and any Penny startup instructions if you no longer want them used.

Local removal does not revoke account access or erase saved notes. Revoke this app’s connection under Penny Settings → Connections. Revoking access stops future authenticated calls; information already returned to an existing conversation remains there.
