Restore a deleted note from Trash

Recover a note during the 30-day retention period and check that it is back in Notes.

Updated October 12, 2026

Moving a note to Trash gives you time to recover it. Items in Trash are automatically deleted after 30 days, and Delete forever removes the recovery option sooner.

To recover a note:

  1. Open Trash in your dashboard.
  2. Check the Notes section and identify the item by its label and deletion date.
  3. Select Restore for that item.
  4. Return to Notes, find it, and read the restored contents.

If the item does not appear, check the selected Location and choose Refresh Trash. When the page says the list is partial, load more items before concluding that the note is absent.

A blank name or “Couldn’t decrypt this item” means Penny could not read the encrypted label during that request. The item may still be present and restorable. Retry the page before treating that display as a missing note.

If Restore reports an error, keep the item in Trash and follow the message. A version conflict calls for refreshing the list before retrying. Permanent deletion already in progress cannot be reversed.

Use Delete forever only when you intend permanent deletion; its confirmation explains that it cannot be undone. Once retention expires or permanent deletion finishes, Trash cannot restore the item.
