When your AI does not recall a saved memory

Check whether the information exists, whether it was retrieved, and whether the chat has the current version.

Updated October 12, 2026

A missing detail in an AI’s answer can have several causes. The information may never have been saved, the AI may not have searched for it, or the current chat may be using an older version.

Start with a direct request: “Read my Penny core memories, then search my notes for the workshop decision. Show me the saved information you are using.” This distinguishes a Penny retrieval from an answer based only on the chat.

If the answer is still missing the detail:

  1. Open Notes and search for the record yourself. Clear restrictive tags, author, and date filters.
  2. Check the note’s wording and tags. Add the subject or names you would naturally search for if the wording is vague.
  3. Check whether it is Hidden or in Trash. A Hidden note is excluded from Penny’s ordinary AI search, even though you can inspect it in the dashboard.
  4. For a standing preference, check Core. Ask the AI to reload the relevant core memory after a correction.
  5. If the AI reports missing tools or a failed read, check that Penny is connected in that host and follow its installation guide.

Start a fresh chat for a clean check after correcting a record. If the issue repeats, report the app, approximate time, and error message through Support; include only the details needed to reproduce it.
