Installation guide

Install Penny for Gemini CLI

Connect Gemini CLI to Penny with its bundled skill, conversation command and native OAuth tools.

Instructions checked October 11, 2026

Install the extension

gemini extensions install https://github.com/HelperLabs/penny-gemini --ref v0.1.0

Review the extension permissions and restart Gemini CLI. Use one Penny channel at a time: disable or uninstall a preview copy before this release. Gallery discovery is separate from direct installation.

Connect your Penny account

Use Gemini’s native OAuth flow. Inside Gemini CLI, if authentication is needed, run:

/mcp auth MyPenny

MyPenny is the MCP server’s configuration name. Sign in to Penny and approve the displayed access. Keep native per-call approvals enabled: leave mcp.allowed unset for this server and avoid always-allow options. Do not add static tokens or authorization headers.

Start Penny in a private conversation

In a foreground conversation where you own the authenticated Penny account, run:

/penny:start

Installation alone does not enable private reads or saves. The skill and hooks remind the agent to recall and save; the normal MCP tools and your approvals perform those operations.

Verify and review what is shared

Search Penny for the exact phrase "Penny connection check 7c98e2". An empty result is fine. Do not save or change anything.

Approve the Penny read call once. A returned result, even empty, confirms the connection. Memory enters your conversation and selected model; a save sends the content chosen for that call. Hooks upload no transcript or telemetry and perform no private reads or automatic saves.

The conversation rules guide the model; they are not an access-control boundary. Disable the extension or MCP server for background, headless, scheduled, remote, shared and subagent runs that must have no private memory. Do not forward private notes to subagents. Saves before compression or exit are not guaranteed.

Disconnect or remove

From your terminal, disable or remove the extension:

gemini extensions disable penny-gemini
# Or remove it:
gemini extensions uninstall penny-gemini

Restart Gemini CLI after changing extensions. Revoke its connection in Penny Settings → Connections to end server access; removing extension files does not establish that the grant was revoked.

Gemini extension management documents update and workspace controls.

Having trouble?

Check /extensions list and restart the CLI if /penny:start is missing. Remove duplicate Penny channels and check whether user or project MCP settings override the extension’s server. Reauthenticate through /mcp auth MyPenny if the server needs login.
