Installation guide

Install Penny for OpenClaw

Connect your private OpenClaw main conversation to Penny for recall, selected saves and a checkpoint before compaction.

Instructions checked October 11, 2026

Install from ClawHub

Install the Helper Labs release:

openclaw plugins install clawhub:penny-openclaw

Review the plugin’s requested memory capability and permissions.

Select the private owner session

Merge these entries into your existing OpenClaw configuration. Preserve other allowed plugins and tools.

{
  "plugins": {
    "allow": ["penny"],
    "slots": { "memory": "penny" },
    "entries": {
      "penny": {
        "enabled": true,
        "hooks": { "allowConversationAccess": true, "allowPromptInjection": true },
        "config": {
          "agentId": "main",
          "sessionKey": "agent:main:main",
          "autoRecall": true,
          "autoCapture": false,
          "preCompactionSave": true
        }
      }
    }
  },
  "tools": { "allow": ["penny_profile", "penny_search", "penny_remember"] }
}

These defaults allow only the owner’s unsandboxed agent:main:main session. The host must identify it as owner-private. Use a different exact agent and session only for your own main conversation. The two hook permissions allow conversation access and recalled context; leave them off for explicit tools only. Your agent’s tool policy also applies.

Turn off Memory Core’s separate background dreaming in the existing configuration:

{"plugins":{"entries":{"memory-core":{"config":{"dreaming":{"enabled":false}}}}}}

If dreaming is running, use /dreaming off and check /dreaming status while Memory Core is still loaded. Then restart the gateway. See OpenClaw’s dreaming guide.

Connect your Penny account

openclaw penny login
openclaw penny status
openclaw plugins inspect penny --runtime --json

Open the login URL and approve Penny for OpenClaw. Login uses its own OAuth client and a one-use local callback. Reconnect when changing OpenClaw profiles or Penny accounts.

Verify and review what is shared

In your private main conversation, ask:

Search Penny for the exact phrase "Penny connection check 7c98e2". An empty result is fine. Do not save or change anything.

A penny_search result confirms a working read. Search queries and selected notes go to Penny; recalled memory enters the agent’s context. The plugin adds no transcript-upload endpoint. Automatic capture is off. The pre-compaction checkpoint may save selected facts through approved tools; set preCompactionSave to false to disable it. Shared, cron, heartbeat, subagent, incognito and sandboxed sessions are denied private memory.

Disconnect or remove

openclaw penny logout
openclaw plugins uninstall penny

Revoke Penny for OpenClaw in Penny Settings → Connections as well. Local logout removes credentials; remote revocation ends the grant. Select a replacement memory provider if needed.

Having trouble?

Check the exact beta version, memory slot, hook permissions and tool allowlist if recall is missing. Retry logout after a busy refresh finishes. If an auth lock remains after a crash, stop all OpenClaw processes for that profile and verify the recorded PID has stopped before removing its lock directory.
