Privacy and control

You can see it all, change it all, and take it with you.

Penny keeps a lot about you, so here are straight answers to what people ask about any AI that remembers: what it knows, whether it forgets, who else sees it, what it does in the background, and whether you can leave with your data.

Our commitments

What we promise, and how you can check

Penny keeps a lot about you. These are the commitments behind it, and each one comes with a way to check it yourself.

Your notes are
Encrypted with AES-256-GCM, in storage and in transit.
Penny
Doesn't train on your data.
Our AI providers
Don't train on your data.
Each decryption leaves a receipt.
By our systems or by a person, it's on record in your dashboard, with the reason.
Once a day, that record is
Sealed into a public, tamper-evident log.
On a different cloud than your data. Append-only and tamper-evident.
Any out-of-the-ordinary access by a person is
Published individually, when it happens.

Five questions, answered

Question 1

What does it know about me?

Ask, in any app you've connected, and your AI lists the actual notes, not a summary. Every note is also in your dashboard, tagged and searchable. There's no note Penny keeps that you can't see there.

Animation in Claude: Dana asks for the latest Penny has on her about the kitchen, and a card lists six notes, each with a Trash button.
Animation in ChatGPT: Dana asks to delete the note about the tile quote, a Moved to Trash card appears with Restore, and ChatGPT says it's recoverable for thirty days.
Question 2

Can I make it forget something?

Say so. Your AI moves the note to Trash, and it's gone from every app you've connected. It stays recoverable for 30 days, then it's deleted for good, or you can delete it forever from Trash right away.

Question 3

Who else can see it?

Your notes are encrypted with AES-256-GCM in storage and in transit. We don't train on your data, and we only use AI providers that don't train on it either. What you share with Claude or ChatGPT is known to them. Every time Penny's service decrypts your memory, it's on record in your dashboard and sealed into a public, tamper-evident log.

Question 4

What happens in the background?

Penny keeps working on your notes after the conversation ends. It saves, summarizes, and links related notes so your AI finds the right ones later. The Memory Activity page shows each step, day by day, and the work uses only providers who keep your data secure and out of training.

Question 5

Can I take it with me?

Your data leaves with you. From your dashboard, export everything as a JSON file you can move to another tool, your notes as Markdown files that open anywhere, and your trackers as CSV. It works the other way too: bring in notes from Obsidian and other memory tools.

Things to try saying

These work in any AI you've connected to Penny, whatever you use it for.

"What do you have on me?"

Lists the notes Penny keeps about you.

"What do you know about my work?"

Shows the notes on one topic, so you can check them.

"Forget what I said about that."

Moves the note to Trash, recoverable for 30 days.

"That's wrong. Fix the note."

Corrects it instead of adding a second note that disagrees.

"Don't save anything about my health."

Adds a rule to your memory policy, which every connected AI reads.

"Ask me before saving anything about my family."

Sets a rule your AI follows before it saves.

"What's in my Core notes?"

Shows the short set every connected AI reads at the start of a chat.

"Restore the note about the tile quote."

Brings a note back from Trash within 30 days.

"Delete everything about my old job."

Moves the matching notes to Trash, where you can review them.

Questions about privacy

Is Penny end-to-end encrypted?

No. AI tools need to read your memory in plain text to use it, so end-to-end encryption isn't compatible with how a memory layer works. Instead we lock down storage and transport: your data is encrypted with AES-256-GCM in storage and in transit. We don't claim we can't read your memory; we commit that we won't.

Do you train AI on my data?

We don't train on your data, and we only use AI providers that don't train on it either. Both halves are commitments we keep by contract with every provider we use.

What does the public log record?

Each decryption of your memory by our service is on record in your dashboard. Routine access is sealed once a day into a public, tamper-evident log on a different cloud than your data, and out-of-the-ordinary access by a person is published individually when it happens. The log holds no memory content, names, or email addresses.

What can Claude or ChatGPT see?

Whatever your AI reads from Penny during a conversation is shared with that app, under its own terms, the same as anything else you tell it. Penny can't control what those apps do with it.

What happens when I delete something?

It goes to Trash, where you can restore it for 30 days. After that it's deleted automatically, or you can delete it forever right away, which permanently removes it from Penny's database.

Can I leave and take my data?

Yes. From your dashboard, export everything anytime: a complete JSON file you can move to another tool, your notes as Markdown files, and your trackers as CSV. You can also bring notes in from Obsidian and other memory tools.
